Wood bulkheads without a cap board are subject to a very short life. When the ends of the pile are exposed to the elements, the pile rots very rapidly and the life-span of the bulkhead is shortened tremendously. The above bulkhead is only 8 years old. It would have lasted about 12 to possibly 15 years with a cap board to protect it against the elements. A cost of approximately another $1.00 per linear foot of bulkhead at the time of construction.

While in the country, did you ever see fruit jars or coffee cans turned upside down over the fence posts? Now you know why. Even the old farmers, back during the turn of the century, knew the posts would last longer if protected from the elements.

There is a substitute to the cap board. Most marine suppliers stock plastic or metal caps that can be placed over the pile top and fastenened to the pile. By all means, use something on them to protect your investment.
